Conversely, there are many who refuse to accept that they should reduce their body weight when they actually need to. Should you diet and more importantly, do you truly require to shed the extra pounds is an important issue we must address.</p>
<p>Before you start any diet regime, you should be clear in your mind about the actual necessity of dieting. It goes without saying that you should not diet if there is no necessity to do so.</p>

If the people around you feel you do not need to reduce your weight by dieting but you persist in thinking that, then it is advisable that you ask for suitable medical guidance from your doctor. The doctor’s opinion is the final criteria and must be followed</p>
<p>Today, there is too much stress being put on being super-thin especially on younger women. They are under the maximum pressure to conform to what is popularly regarded as the ideal body type. The media reinforces this image by portraying the very thin as being the most desirable. However, it is not feasible for many people to be excessively thin and in fact, it is most unhealthy to attempt to be so. Unfortunately, many women are   influenced by the celebrities portrayed on TV, magazines and the Internet. They are convinced that the only way to achieve those extremely skinny looks is by dieting rigorously.</p>
<p>How do you then find out whether you fall in the category that needs to control their weight? Many measurement devices can indicate the need to reduce calorie intake. One such accepted chart is the BMI (Body Mass Index). This measuring system evaluates the correlation between a person’s height and weight. The statistic thus derived is then positioned on a chart to understand how the individual can be compared on the weight scale. It seeks to establish whether he or she is over, under or within the normal weight range. The BMI however does not consider the body framework of the individual. Thus, it ignores the fact that he or she may have a large or small body type. It also ignores   muscle mass in the body. It is possible for a person with big muscles to show a high BMI number but this may be deceptive as he or she may in fact not have excessive weight at all. It is clear that BMI may not be only indicator of optimum weight for all people. However, it is still a good tool for most people to determine the need to diet.</p>
<p>Before any decision to diet is arrived at, one should consult a dietitian or doctor. Only then should an appropriate diet be developed. Any diet is incomplete without a proper exercise regime. Do ensure that you keep your doctor informed about your plans and be aware of the probable consequences such dieting and exercising may have on your health. After all, you do not want to create new problems for yourself than may already exist because of the superfluous pounds!</p>

<p>The best way to burn calories is by exercising. One important fact to keep in mind is when one exercises is as important as how one exercises. Exercising right before a meal only makes one hungrier and consume more calories thanks to the extra food consumed.  Exercising after a meal means burning off those calories just consumed. Exercising does not necessarily mean going off to a gym or lifting weights but walking for instance, after a meal instead of lying down watching TV would just do the trick.</p>
<p><span id="more-15"></span>Exercising at every opportunity should be the motto for all those looking to lose weight.  This can easily be done by changing habits. When shopping, choose a parking space as far from the door as possible to get some extra walking in. Don’t drive around looking for a spot nearest to the door. In addition to some extra exercise, one avoids the frustration of driving around looking for a spot. This will help save time and money as quite a bit of gas will be saved.  Again try to enter through a door that is not automatic, the pushing and pulling on the door is exercise. Or walk up instead of using the elevator. Climbing stairs is terrific cardio exercise.</p>
<p>By changing a few daily habits one can end up burning quite a bit of calories. Always keep an extra pair of walking shoes at work. In fact go to work with a comfortable pair of walking shoes and change them at work after the walk. At work too one can find ways to burn off calories. During lunchtime, taking a walk around the block after lunch not only will burn off calories but will help eliminate that heavy feeling in the abdomen after a meal. Walking up the stairs in the office building is great. If the work area is several floors up, it is easy to get off a couple of floors earlier and walk up those, burning all those unwanted calories. In addition the endorphins released will get you back to work in a great mood. Again if the work is sedentary, one can do some leg lifts when the workload is light or go up and down the stairs and get back. This will help and better the circulation in addition to burning off calories.</p>
<p>Whether at work or at home, there are so many ways one can burn off extra calories by just changing your daily habits. There is no need to pay extra for a gym or a trainer.  Have an extra pair of good walking shoes with you all the time and walk off those calories. So walk away for a slimmer look and a healthier heart and of course a better mood.</p>

<p>Obesity puts you in danger of some kinds of cancers and you should therefore plan to lose weight to make sure of good health. Obese women are high on the scale of increased danger of developing cancer of the breast. </p>

If however, there is a change in lifestyle and diet causing the patient to lose even 10 or 15 pounds, the indications of OA can be mitigated greatly and the progress of the disease can be slowed down.</p>
<p>The above are not the only diseases which attack obese people more than people with optimal weight. The other disorders and problems  include: depression, gall bladder disease, hypertension, carpel tunnel syndrome, pain of the lower back, disease of the liver, type 2 diabetes, infertility problems, heat disorders and birth defects,.</p>
<p>There is no one who wants to be unhealthy. Good health and wellbeing is something all desire and one must therefore eat correctly in order to maintain good health. Regrettably, most people do not understand and appreciate the likelihood of the many disorders that may happen with every increase in the obesity scale. Perhaps if they did understand the consequences, they would take better care of themselves and be more encouraged to diet for good health. That way they could ensure their well-being not only for now but for the future too.</p>

<p>Vegetables especially raw vegetables are the perfect food for your diet as snacks.  With the choice of vegetables available on the market, everyone has at least one vegetable that one likes: tomatoes, celery, spinach, lettuce, peas in their pod, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, peppers, cucumbers and so many more. It is important that these vegetables are prepared ahead of time and are available when that urge hits. </p>
<p><span id="more-18"></span>They can be eaten fresh, cut up, lightly sautéed in a little olive oil or with some garlic and red peppers. These prepared veggies can then be eaten as a side dish, eaten cold or warmed up when the craving hits.<br />
Vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, cauliflower and beets can be washed, lightly steamed and put into plastic bags for munching later on.</p>
<p>A fruit is another munchable snack. One has to choose those with minimum calories.  Oranges, grapefruit, kiwis, apples, pears, peaches, grapes, apricots, plums, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, papayas, figs etc. are all good while dieting. Bananas and mangoes have too many calories, but once in a way they will help you hold off hunger.   Keeping fresh fruit on hand can prevent one from reaching out for a bag of chips. One must eat when the urge hits so that the pining for food does not play havoc with the diet, sending one off into a binging spree that can ruin the diet.</p>
<p>Nuts are another great diet saver. The big advantage is that they do not need any preparation. Walnuts, pecans, peanuts and almonds make great choices. These do have some extra calories but they will also appease your craving quickly. They are really healthy choices. Always have nuts available in the house. They will help when prepared vegetables, salads or fruits are not at hand.</p>
<p>During any diet, the key is to get rid of those empty calories. Sticking to the diet is important to achieve the target weight loss. Breaking the diet means to start all over again. Snacking is all right as long as it is the right kind of snack. The most important thing is to have these snacks on hand so that one does not snack on the diet taboo snacks. Another important factor during dieting is to drink lots of water. This will also help keep urges under control.  Being well prepared by having the right foods properly prepared and handy can inevitably save a diet from getting broken and the urge to snack can be satisfied without risking breaking the diet.</p>

<p>The first is <strong>Low Carb Diets</strong>. These are based on the thought that if carbs are eaten in limited quantity or not at all weight loss will occur. Some of the more known ones in this area are the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet.  It would be a good idea to find out which low carb diet is good for you as some can be quite strict.</p>

<strong> Cabbage Soup Diet</strong> is a diet where weight loss happens when you eat cabbage soup and other ingredients. Other foods that are allowed are in very limited quantities.</p>
<p>Then there is the <strong>Grapefruit Diet</strong>. Eat lots of grapefruit and drink lots of grapefruit juice is its mantra. Again other foods are consumed in limited amounts.</p>
<p>Then we have the <strong>Mediterranean Diet</strong>. This is a plan that is good for your heart. It will allow you to eat foods that are commonly found in the Mediterranean regions like olive oil, fish, whole grains, vegetables and even red wine.</p>
<p><strong>The Zone Diet</strong> makes a point about a balance in the ratio between carbs, fats and proteins. This diet is great for those who would like to eat healthier and it has no deprivation system.</p>
<p>Now the <strong>Gluten Free Diet</strong> does exactly what its name says. It gets rid of the gluten that is found in foods like wheat, bread, crackers, pasta and cake.  This is an ideal diet for persons with gluten intolerance.</p>
<p>The <strong>3 Day Diet</strong> allows three meals per day but there is dramatic weight loss. It should be pointed out here that the weight that you have lost is mostly water. This is a good diet for those how are looking to look slim temporarily for a special occasion.</p>
<p><strong>Sacred Heart Diet</strong> is a seven day diet that involves a healthy soup made of tomatoes, onions, celery and carrots. It was created to help overweight patients lose extra weight prior to surgery.</p>
<p>Then you have the <strong>Negative Calorie Diet</strong> where the emphasis is on eating food that requires more energy for the body to consume than the calories it actually has. Celery, watercress, cucumber and apples are some of the negative calorie foods.</p>
<p><strong>The Lemonade Diet</strong> also goes by the name of the ‘Master Cleanse Plan’. It is a juice fast where you make a drink using lemons, maple syrup and cayenne pepper.  This diet can be effective but you have to keep away from solid food for ten days.</p>

Let’s look at the facts about BMI. Today it is used to determine the ideal weight of a person. BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a method of determining a person’s weight in proportion to his height, though it does not take into account whether a person is small built or built on larger lines.</p>
<p>How does one calculate BMI? It is very simple to calculate the BMI of a person though you may need to use a calculator.</p>

The calculation of BMI includes four basic steps &#8211; the first one is to assess the height of a person in inches and then multiply it by itself in other words simply square the height. In the second step, the weight of the person is determined in pounds and then multiplied by seven hundred and three. In the third step, divide the number you get from the second step by the number that you get from the first step. The final step includes the rounding up of the result that is derived in the third step to the nearest whole number and the final result is your BMI. Isn’t that easy!</p>
<p>After you know your BMI, it is easy to figure out if your weight is ideal, if you are underweight or overweight.  The scale mentioned here may not be perfect as a few people may have a large body type when compared to others. Such people may have a BMI that is slightly higher but this does not mean that they are overweight.</p>
<p>BMI Scale:</p>
<p>BMI which is under 15 …….. Starvation</p>
<p>BMI 15 to 18     ………………. Underweight</p>
<p>BMI 18.5 to 25 ……………… Ideal Weight</p>
<p>BMI 25 to 30     ………………. Overweight</p>
<p>BMI 30 to 40     ………………. Obese</p>
<p>BMI which is over 40 ………. Morbidly Obese</p>
<p>If you’ve calculated your BMI, you will be able to know where you stand in terms of your weight. You must remember that BMI does not take into consideration the different body types or the amount of muscle. Hence people who have a muscular body will show a higher BMI than the others. People who are older with lower muscle mass may be overweight and their BMI could be low.</p>
<p>If you find it difficult to determine the category you fall under then you may opt for other methods to check your weight. Following a fitness regime by exercising and dieting may help you look and feel better but it will not bring down your BMI and this is because fat is replaced by muscle so in such cases it is easier to measure your declining waistline.</p>
<p>Body Mass Index is a good way to measure the ideal weight for a given height, though it must be remembered that it is not the most perfect method. When you calculate BMI, keep in mind that there could be other factors that come into play where the ‘right weight’ is concerned.</p>

<p>The downside is that many fast food combinations are unhealthy especially when eaten on a regular basis and can sabotage the best diets when eaten occasionally. There are some ways to make fast food healthier however, by using a few eliminations and making the right choices.</p>

Eliminating cheese from everything one orders will cut down lots of fat, calories and the unnecessary salt from the meal. Cheese-less pizzas can be ordered and the cheese can be substituted with an additional vegetable like mushrooms, green pepper, olives or tomato, thus adding extra flavor and nutrition. A cheese-less burger can have additional lettuce, onions, tomatoes or sprouts. All these vegetables add nutrition, taste, vitamins and fiber.</p>
<p>Many condiments used on fast food are high in calories. Substituting high calorie mayonnaise for mustard or ketchup will notably reduce calories. Again, substituting fat free or diet mayonnaise for regular full fat mayonnaise will reduce the calories.  Flavor can be enhanced by adding hot sauce or some red pepper flakes. Red pepper flakes are not only flavorful but good for health as well.</p>
<p>Try and substitute fish or chicken for a regular beef product. Both chicken and fish are healthier, with fewer calories and fat. Choosing grilled fish or chicken will further diminish calories than the deep fried and breaded varieties.</p>
<p>Always include a salad. Fresh vegetables provide minerals, vitamins and the all important fiber. It is important, however, to use a fat free dressing instead of the regular full fat kinds. One tip on obtaining the right amount of dressing is to dip the tip of the fork in the dressing before forking the salad.</p>
<p>Substitute water for the calorie laden soft drinks. Even the diet varieties though low in calories have sodium, sugar, caffeine and carbonation. Carbonation causes bloating and burping while too much caffeine tends to dehydrate the body making you thirstier. Water is healthy and helps in the digestion. It is the perfect thirst quencher and the life fluid required by the body.</p>
<p>Fast food is great but by modifying it a bit one can obtain a tremendous cut in both fat and overall calorie intake. Today, the fast food chains have taken into consideration their clients’ needs for healthier choices and are offering a wide variety of healthier product choices not available ten years ago. These include substitutions of products and both low calorie and low salt products. Today a healthy fast food meal can be eaten and enjoyed without trauma and guilt. There’s no need to give up fast food if you enjoy it. You just need to be selective and make the right choices. Go and enjoy your favorite fast food.</p>
